AP English Literature and Composition

This course is intended for college-bound students who have an interest in reading fiction and poetry. The College Board compares this course content to a year in a sophomore college English class. There is a heavy emphasis on analysis as students read a variety of works written over the past one thousand years with a focus on the last century of classics. Most reading is teacher directed focusing on critical thinking and class discussion. Students will expand and utilize their literary vocabulary on a daily basis in written and oral responses. Approximately 30% of the course is spent reading and discussing poetry which is a major component on the AP English Literature and Composition exam. Additionally, students will continue to develop their own unique writing voice while deepening their understanding of stylistic techniques applied in the English language. Students typically find this to be a challenging, yet enjoyable AP experience. The passing rate for students taking this exam is typically between 65-70%.
